FnOLens

Everything FnOLens does

FnOLens is a Chrome and Edge extension that shows what sits behind every page of Dynamics 365 Finance & Operations: the tables, fields, data entities, forms and dual-write maps. It is built for functional consultants, developers, solution architects, data migration teams and key users.

Feature guide for version 0.18.11. Clips show the real extension on a demo page with Microsoft's standard metadata.

Environment hop

One click opens the page you are on in another environment (UAT, DEV, PROD…) with the same form, company and language. Press Alt+Shift+H or use the toolbar button. Each environment gets its own colour so you always know where you are.

With FnOLens

  • Compare a record or setup between UAT and PROD in seconds.
  • No retyping long environment addresses or menu item names.
  • Fewer mistakes from changing data in the wrong environment.

Without FnOLens

  • Copy the URL, edit the host name by hand, then find the same company and page again.
  • Easy to lose the company (cmp=) or menu item (mi=), so you land on the wrong page.
  • Repeated many times a day by anyone testing or supporting several environments.
Free

Search by name or label

Type what you see on screen, like "customer group", or a technical name like CustTable or SalesTable.SalesId. FnOLens searches more than 18,000 tables, 220,000 fields, 5,800 data entities, forms, menu items and enums as you type. Typos are fine.

With FnOLens

  • Go from a screen label to the technical name in seconds.
  • Works for functional people who do not know the technical names.
  • Results are grouped by type, with the best match first.

Without FnOLens

  • Open Visual Studio and search the Application Explorer, which needs a development machine.
  • Or search the web and Microsoft Learn, and guess which table a label belongs to.
  • Labels and technical names differ ("Customer group" is CustGroup), so the guess is often wrong.
Pro

This page and Find a field

The side panel shows what the page in your tab is made of: its form and menu item, the tables behind it, and the data entities of its main table. A search box finds any field on the page by label or name, then scrolls to it and outlines it, opening the right tab or FastTab first. When you move to another page in D365, the panel follows: it goes back to This page for the new page, and Back returns to what you had open.

With FnOLens

  • Know the form, menu item and tables of any page without opening anything else.
  • Find a field on a large form (Released products has more than 350) without clicking through every FastTab.
  • Useful in training, testing and support calls: "where is this field?" is answered at once.

Without FnOLens

  • Use Personalize or Form information (right-click) field by field to see table and field names.
  • Expand FastTabs one by one to look for a field.
  • Look up the form's data sources in Visual Studio.
Pro

Pick a field or button

Click ◎ Pick, then click any field or button on the D365 page. FnOLens shows the table and field behind it, or for a button the form it opens or the class it runs, with all the details below.

With FnOLens

  • One click from "what is this?" to the exact table, field or menu item.
  • Works on buttons too, which are hard to trace any other way.
  • Ideal for writing specifications, test scripts and data migration mappings.

Without FnOLens

  • Right-click → Form information gives the control name, but often not the table field behind a group or display control.
  • Tracing a button to its menu item or class usually needs Visual Studio and the form's source.
Pro

Field and table details

Every table and field has a detail view.

  • Field: type, string length, extended data type, enum values, and the table it relates to.
  • Where the field is used: every form that shows it (with ◎ Show for the page you are on), every data entity that exposes it, and the same field in other tables. When a search finds a field that is in several tables, its view lists every form it is on, with ◎ Open & show: that opens the form in a new tab and goes straight to the field.
  • Table: fields, relations, tables that refer to it, the forms and data entities that use it, and its staging role.

Every long list has its own filter box.

With FnOLens

  • Impact analysis in minutes: see every form and entity a field touches before you change it.
  • Enum values with their numbers, needed for imports, OData filters and reports.
  • Relations show how to join tables for reports and queries.

Without FnOLens

  • Open each table, EDT and enum in Visual Studio, or read Microsoft Learn page by page.
  • Finding every form and entity that uses a field means a cross-reference search on a development machine.
  • Enum values are often looked up by trial and error.
Pro

Data entities

For every data entity FnOLens shows its data sources as a tree, its staging table, its OData names, and a field-by-field mapping to tables with string lengths and enum values.

  • DMF Excel template: one click builds an Excel file with one column per field that Data management imports. Keys and mandatory fields are highlighted, and a second sheet lists every field.
  • Entity fields on the open page: with a form open in your tab, the entity's fields that are on that form are marked "on this page", and ◎ Show highlights them on the form. Details opens the table field behind any entity field: type, length, enum values, relations and where it is used.
  • Recommended entity: for the form in your tab, FnOLens recommends the entity to load its data, in two steps. First it finds the entity, importable with Data management, that covers the most fields shown on the form. Then it picks the newest version of that entity. On All sales orders, SalesOrderHeaderV3Entity covers the most fields, so FnOLens recommends its newest version, SalesOrderHeaderV4Entity. On Released products it recommends EcoResReleasedProductV2Entity (207 of 293 fields). Where the standard entity is not the newest version, FnOLens follows the standard: for projects it recommends Projects (ProjectEntity), not Projects V2.

With FnOLens

  • Pick the right entity for a data migration with evidence, not guesswork.
  • A ready-to-fill import template instead of exporting an empty file from Data management.
  • See which entity column fills which field on the form, which helps users check imported data.

Without FnOLens

  • Compare entities by exporting sample files from Data management one by one, or by reading each entity in Visual Studio.
  • Map entity fields to form fields by hand, often in a spreadsheet.
  • A wrong entity choice is usually found late, during test loads.
Pro

Forms

For every form FnOLens lists its fields by section, its data sources, every button with the form it opens or the class it runs, and its calculated values (display methods).

With FnOLens

  • See a whole form's structure in one list, searchable, instead of clicking through it.
  • Know which values are calculated and not stored, so you don't look for them in a table.

Without FnOLens

  • Open the form design in Visual Studio, or click through every tab, FastTab and menu on the page.
  • Calculated values look like normal fields on screen, and people search tables for data that is not stored.
Pro

Exports to Excel and CSV

Any table's or entity's field list goes to Excel or CSV in one click: name, label, type, string length or enum values, mandatory, and, for entities, the source table and whether Data management imports the field. "Copy fields for Excel" puts the list on the clipboard to paste straight into a sheet.

With FnOLens

  • Field lists for functional designs, mapping workbooks and data migration specs in seconds.
  • Enum values and lengths are in the file, so mapping and validation rules can be written directly.

Without FnOLens

  • Retype field lists by hand from Visual Studio or screenshots.
  • Or export from Data management and then add labels, types and lengths yourself.
Pro

Dual-write maps

FnOLens reads the dual-write maps of the environment in your tab, with your own sign-in and read-only requests. It shows how many maps are running, stopped or partly running, groups each map by its F&O entity and Dataverse table, and shows record sync and delete sync separately. Search maps by name, F&O entity or Dataverse table, open the details, and export one map or all of them to Excel. The export has readable field mappings, directions (F&O → Dataverse, Dataverse → F&O, both) and value maps.

With FnOLens

  • A status overview of all maps on one screen, for go-live checks and support.
  • Mapping documentation for audits and handovers in one click.
  • Compare maps between environments by exporting both.

Without FnOLens

  • Open the Dual-write workspace and read maps one at a time.
  • Document field mappings with screenshots or by retyping them; Microsoft offers no readable export.
  • The raw field map is technical JSON with codes (direction 1, 2, 3) that need decoding.
Pro

Shortcuts: Table Browser, Open form, OData

From any table, entity or form, one button opens it in the environment and company you choose at the top of the panel:

  • Table Browser for any table.
  • Open form through its menu item.
  • View OData (top 10) for public entities, with a read-only GET request.

With FnOLens

  • Check real data behind a field in seconds, in the right company.
  • No hand-built URLs.

Without FnOLens

  • Type ?mi=SysTableBrowser&tableName=…&cmp=… or OData URLs by hand.
  • Easy to open the wrong company or environment.
Team

Team plan: your own metadata

FnOLens ships with Microsoft's standard models. Team customers can run the included export tool on a development machine and load their own metadata. Every feature above then also covers their custom models, extensions, tables and fields.

With FnOLens

  • Partners and customers see their customisations next to the standard ones.
  • One licence key and invoice for the whole team.

Without FnOLens

  • Custom objects are only visible in Visual Studio on a development machine, so functional team members cannot look them up.
